Philadelphia Phillies infielder Jean Segura has distinction no one wants
Someone has to be at the top of the list. It used to be Kyle Seager, but with his retirement, someone had to take over the mantle. That player is Philadelphia Phillies infielder Jean Segura.
That title? Segura is now the active major league leader in games played without reaching the postseason.
Philadelphia Phillies infielder Jean Segura holds dubious distinction
It may be somewhat telling that the top three active players on that list have all spent significant time with the Phillies. J.T. Realmuto is not going anywhere in the near future. Maikel Franco played his way out of Philadelphia, and was a part of the Braves roster last year, but was never added to the postseason roster.
Chances are, if Segura is going to break that streak this year, the Phillies will have to end their own postseason drought. He is signed through this season with a team option for 2023, allowing Philadelphia to keep a solid part of their infield for the next two seasons.
Segura was one of the better pieces in their lineup in 2021. He produced a .290/.348/.436 batting line in his 567 plate appearances, hitting 14 homers and 27 doubles while stealing nine bases. His 111 OPS+ was the third best mark of anyone who received at least 80 plate appearances for the Phillies last season.
Chances are, if the Phillies are going to make that run to the postseason, Segura will not be their third best hitter in 2022. They have plenty of work to do on their lineup as it is, especially as the path through the NL East has gotten more difficult. Segura may add a few more games to his total if the Phillies fail to make those needed upgrades.
Jean Segura now has the most games played without reaching the postseason of any active player. It is not a distinction the Philadelphia Phillies infielder wanted.
