Every team would love to have Juan Soto in the middle of their lineup. The New York Mets may have the next best thing.

According to reports, the Mets are set to sign Elian Soto during the next international signing period. Elian is the younger brother of Juan Soto, allowing the Mets to dream that they have their own future version of the star outfielder.

There is not a lot of information about the younger Soto. He is a left handed hitting outfielder/third baseman who has displayed excellent power potential in the few videos that are available. However, it is easy to dream on the bloodlines and hope that he can be just like his brother.

It is also impossible to expect that he turns out like his brother. Juan Soto made his major league debut at 19 years old at immediately established himself as a star. Through four years, he has produced a stellar 160 OPS+ with 98 homers and 91 doubles in his 2003 plate appearances. He has proven to be one of the better on base machines in the game, leading the National League in on base percentage in each of the past two years, while being a true power threat.

If his brother can even be 75% of that player, the Mets would be happy. They could have a long term answer in the outfield, someone who may be getting close to the majors in the next few years. If the Nationals’ star does not sign a long term extension, maybe they can use the idea of playing with his brother as an enticement come free agency.

But that is all far into the future. Soto, no matter how impressive his bloodlines may be, will need time to develop and hone his raw tools. It is impossible to expect that he will be ready for the majors as a teenager the way his brother was. That does not mean that one cannot dream, however.
