Cameron Maybin, a first-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2005 who was a part of the Houston Astros 2017 World Series title team, has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on social media.
After 15 seasons in Major League Baseball with 10 different teams, Cameron Maybin has retired
In a post on Twitter, Maybin announced his retirement. In the post, he reminisced on his debut on August 17, 2007, for the Detroit Tigers on the road against the New York Yankees and about logging his first Major League hit the following day, hitting a fifth-inning solo home run off New York starter Roger Clemens.
In the years that followed, Maybin would suit up for both the Tigers and Yankees, as well as eight other teams. Among his other stops are with the Houston Astros, where he was selected off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels in time to join the Astros in time for their 2017 World Series run. He would go 2-for-7 in the postseason for the Astros, including 1-for-3 in the Fall Classic against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Maybin saw action in nine games for the New York Mets last season, going just 1-for-28 at the plate. He did, however, play a pivotal role for the Mets in the outfield, filling in at all three outfield positions while New York dealt with a slew of injuries.
In his retirement announcement, Maybin pledged to continue working with the Players Alliance, βin our effort to provide access and opportunity for the next generation of Black ballplayers,β Maybin wrote.
ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney perhaps paid Maybin the highest compliment, giving him kudos for his efforts as a teammate during his career.
