Most baseball prognosticators envision that Clayton Kershaw will end up in one of those places in free agency. He will either return to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he has spent his entire career, or head to the Texas Rangers to be closer to home. However, with the ongoing lockout, there are few rumors as to which way Kershaw may be leaning.

That makes anything Kershaw does somewhat newsworthy, including his appearance at a Dallas Mavericks game on Wednesday night.

On the surface, this would be something to discuss. Kershaw is showing up to support another Dallas team, something that players in each city do. It could be taken as a sign that he will be heading to the Rangers, the hometown hero coming back to finish his career.

But there is a lot more to the story than Kershaw showing up at a random Mavericks game. Dirk Nowitski, arguably the biggest star in franchise history, is having his jersey retired. Some of the biggest names in Dallas sports history were in attendance.

That includes Kershaw. While he may not have played for a team in the Dallas area, he was born in Dallas and went to school at Highland Park. He still lives in the area in the offseason despite having spent his entire major league career in Los Angeles. There is no reason why he wouldn’t have been a part of the festivities.

So what does this mean for Kershaw’s future? Absolutely nothing other than the fact that he was able to watch a basketball game and see Nowitski’s jersey get retired. It is impossible to derive anything else from that moment, no matter how much someone may want to. But that is what happens during a lockout where there is absolutely nothing else to talk about.
