Now with New York Mets, Mark Canha pens heartfelt goodbye to Oakland
Tony Bennett may have left his heart in San Francisco, but it’s clear that former Oakland A’s and soon-to-be New York Mets outfielder Mark Canha left a piece of his heart across the Bay in Oakland.
Now with the New York Mets, Mark Canha posted his goodbye to Oakland and Oakland A’s fans on Twitter
On his Twitter page, Canha posted a long and emotion-filled goodbye to the city of Oakland and many within the Oakland A’s organization, the team where he made his Major League debut on April 8, 2015, and has played all seven of his MLB seasons. That will change this year, however, as Canha signed a two-year, $26.5 million deal with the Mets. He was a key piece of a pre-lockout spending spree by the Mets, which also netted Max Scherzer, Eduardo Escobar, and Starling Marte, giving a new look to a team looking to challenge for the National League East division title in 2022.
Canha slashed a combined .244/.344/.431 with 89 home runs and 294 RBI in 645 games with Oakland. He recently explained why he left the A’s to be in New York.
“I think it’s nice to feel wanted, and the Mets made it abundantly clear that they wanted me and they demonstrated that in various ways,” Canha said.
In his goodbye on social media, Canha gave special recognition to his manager in Oakland, Bob Melvin, saying, “Thank you BoMel for being an amazing manager, human, and for being the Peter Pan to our Lost Boys. I couldn’t ask for a better manager for my time in Oakland. It was the perfect fit.”
That particular mention cut a little deeper for A’s fans as not only has Canha left the franchise, but so has Melvin, shocking the baseball world by leaving Oakland this offseason and signing a contract to manage the San Diego Padres.
More changes are expected in Oakland once the current MLB lockout ends, with the A’s rumored to be sellers for players such as Matt Chapman and Matt Olson.
