Nepotism will not save the Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies are one of the more perplexing organizations in the majors. They do not seem to have a grasp on reality, believing that they can contend despite an obvious dearth of talent compared to the rest of the division. An interim general manager who did absolutely nothing at the trade deadline, despite obvious trade candidates that would not return and neglected to put a Qualifying Offer on Jon Gray, was given the permanent role. It is no wonder that the Rockies are the laughing stock of the majors.

And the idiocy of ownership continued on Friday. Sterling Monfort, the youngest son of owner Dick Monfort, was named the Director of Professional Scouting.

Colorado Rockies continue incestuous ways in front office

At least Monfort can explain handing his son this role due to his experience. Sterling has been a part of the organization in various capacities since 2013, including a role as the assistant director of scouting operations on the amateur side. At least this Monfort should have some idea as to what he is looking at.

But that does not mean that he will actually tell his father that the Rockies need to do everything differently. Nor does it mean that he will not share that ridiculous ideal that they just need to bring back the same players they had and the roster will magically reach the postseason. Maybe he sees the same unicorns, show ponies, and leprechauns that his father does when looking on the diamond. Are we certain that Dick Monfort did not make his money selling acid to hippies while partaking of his stock?

To be fair, nothing different should have been expected. Monfort having a son in the front office meant that it was only a matter of time before he was put in charge of something. At least he actually had to work his way up the ladder instead of being handed a position of authority.

There is also virtually zero chance that this Monfort will be let go from his job. He will likely just keep moving up the ladder as positions open up with the excuse that he has experience in the front office to justify such promotions. Of course, that can change if he ever gives someone with the last name ‘Monfort’ a negative scouting report.

The Colorado Rockies have made Sterling Monfort, son of owner Dick Monfort, the new Director of Professional Scouting. Nepotism will not help this franchise.
