It would be easy to forget about Anibal Sanchez. The former Washington Nationals pitcher did not play in 2021 despite wanting to continue his career. He held showcases into late April, and generated interest, but sat out the season after he was unable to locate a deal that fit his criteria.

That desire to continue his career is still there. Sanchez is once again considering a return to the mound and is planning to throw in front of a scout with a radar gun to determine whether or not to attempt a comeback.

A return to the majors would be an impressive feat for Sanchez. He had a rough showing when he last pitched, posting a 6.62 ERA and a 1.660 WHiP in his 53 innings, striking out 43 batters with 18 walks. While his strikeout and walk rates were solid, he allowed a league leading 39 runs and gave up 11 homers.

While the 2020 season was rough for many notable players, it was fair to wonder if this was the beginning of the end for Sanchez. He was 36 years old that season and ended the year with nearly 2000 innings in his major league career. Those years and innings take a toll.

But Sanchez has been counted out before. He had been left for dead after two rough seasons to end his tenure in Detroit before bouncing back with an impressive showing in Atlanta in 2018. As he feels rejuvenated and that he is throwing with more velocity than he had in recent years, it is possible that he has another comeback left in his arm.

Considering the lack of pitching options beyond Clayton Kershaw and Carlos Rodon, Sanchez could generate interest once again if the velocity is there. He could be worth a lottery ticket for a rebuilding team, getting a chance to continue his career while potentially being a trade asset at the deadline.
