New York Mets stir social media with good luck wish and geography lesson
The New York Mets were just trying to use social media to wish their home state’s lone NFL team in the playoffs good luck in the postseason. Who would have thought it would turn into a firestorm?
By wishing the Buffalo Bills good luck in the NFL postseason on Twitter, the New York Mets drew an interesting mix of comments from New York sports fans
With Major League Baseball in a lockout, MLB teams are still trying to find ways to connect with their fan bases and stay front of mind with sports fans, especially as the NFL playoffs kicked into high gear this past weekend with the NFL’s first-ever Super Wild Card Weekend.
So who could blame the New York Mets for sending out a simple good luck message, right? What could possibly go wrong?
Well, apparently plenty can go wrong when you’re wishing the AFC East rival of the New York Jets (a team that the Mets shared Shea Stadium with for 19 years) good luck in the playoffs. New York fans were quick to remind the Mets social media team of this fact despite the Jets being nowhere near the postseason race.
However, there were plenty in the comments as well, reminding their fellow fans that the Bills are technically the only NFL team to play their games in New York state (a fact that Bills quarterback Josh Allen has mentioned in a previous press conference). The New York Giants and New York Jets both play their home games in New Jersey (Met Life Stadium is in East Rutherford).
Some fans also pointed out that the home stadium for the New England Patriots (the team the Bills were playing the opening round) was much closer to Citi Field than Buffalo. But, let’s be real, the New York-Boston rivalry runs too deep for the Mets to wish the Patriots good luck under any scenario.
The Mets still play their games in New York state at Citi Field, so wishing good luck to the only New York team still alive in the postseason makes sense, right? On the surface, absolutely. In the Twitter comments, well, not so much.
