Let’s continue our offseason look at fan-proposed hypothetical trade ideas made to former Major League Baseball general manager Jim Bowden for an article in The Athletic. In this article, we will look at a trade idea involving the New York Yankees and Oakland A’s.

Would this hypothetical fan-proposed trade idea between the New York Yankees and Oakland A’s work in real life?

In the article featured in The Athletic (subscription required), a fan proposes that the New York Yankees send three prospects (right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gomez, shortstop Oswald Peraza, and catcher Austin Wells) plus right-handed pitcher Luis Gil to the Oakland A’s in exchange for first baseman Matt Olson and a pitcher to be named later.

So, in this fan-proposed trade, the Yankees would be sending three prospects listed among the organization’s top 10 to Oakland, in addition to Gil, who threw 29.1 innings for the Yankees last season and logged a 3.07 ERA, 4.40 FIP, 1.330 WHIP, and 141 ERA+ in his six starts.

That is a pretty heavy price for New York to pay, and Bowden agrees with that. However, what if that pitcher coming back in return to the Yankees was Chris Bassitt, who started 27 games for the A’s last season and earned an All-Star Game bid while finishing the campaign with a 3.15 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 1.055 WHIP, and 130 ERA+. He also overcame a scary moment in the mound, eventually returning to action later in the season after being hit in the head by a line drive.

Bassitt and Olson will be two of the biggest potential trade pieces for the A’s once the lockout ends and transactions resume. Knowing that, would Oakland package them together in a deal that would land the franchise three high-ranking prospects and a Major League-ready arm in return? Bowden says that, unless the pitcher is Bassitt in the deal, the price tag is too steep from New York’s perspective to try to land Olson, who is expected to command a high return after posting a career-high slash line of .271/.371/.540 along with 39 home runs and 111 RBI last season. He also has two years of team control remaining, making him a potential long-term option for whichever team lands him in a trade.

Bowden counters that perhaps a package consisting of Peraza (New York’s third-ranked prospect who advanced to Triple-A last season) and Gil could be enough to land Olson alone. Would New York be happy with getting Olson in a 2-for-1 deal?

One player not mentioned in this hypothetical trade is Luke Voit, who could potentially be packaged in a deal that could help the Yankees land a coveted player from Oakland. Voit was reportedly almost traded away from New York at last year’s trade deadline, so the Yankees sending him in a package would make sense.

So what do you think of this fan-proposed deal? If you’re a Yankees fan, would you trade away some of your top prospects to land a potential long-term answer for your team at first base? Would you go all in and try to get Olson and Bassitt, or is Olson enough? If you’re an Oakland fan, is this package enough to send away one or two of your top players? Would you counter?
