Colorado Rockies make right move with Bud Black extension
The Colorado Rockies have not exactly been a franchise that made much sense over the years. Between their dogged refusal to recognize that they will not contend in the NL West to their inability to go outside the franchise for free agents or executives, the Rockies have been as close to a team in isolation as possible.
The Rockies have made strides in that department lately. Even their internal moves have not been overly terrible, such as their decision to extend Bud Black through 2023.
Colorado Rockies make right move by keeping Bud Black
On the surface, this may seem like another questionable Rockies move. The franchise has not had a winning record since 2018. Their 74-87 record last season was right in line with the usual when it came to Colorado, entirely mediocre and forgettable.
But it also overshadows that Black has been a reasonably solid manager throughout his time on the bench. He has brought the Rockies to the postseason twice, accounting for 40 percent of the playoff appearances in franchise history.
Black is also a solid option for a team that, whether they want to admit it or not, is going to be going through a rebuilding phase. With the Dodgers, Giants, and Padres all looking as though they will be contending for a playoff berth, and a drastic gap in terms of talent, it could be a long couple of years in Colorado.
In the end, they will need a veteran voice, someone who has been through the battles and knows how to develop players. While he will turn 65 years old this year, and will not be with the Rockies forever, Black is the type of manager they need.
The Colorado Rockies are extending Bud Black. After continually making questionable moves with the franchise, they have done something right.
