Former MLB player Jeremy Giambi passes away at age 47

The younger brother of slugger Jason Giambi, Jeremy appeared in parts of six seasons in the major leagues for the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox.

Throughout his career, Giambi was a powerful left-handed home run threat who frequently posted double-digit home run totals and played the outfield corners and first base as well.

Across 510 games and just over 1,700 plate appearances, Giambi posted a 3.4 bWAR, hitting 52 home runs and driving in 209 and posting an OPS+ of 111. His best season came in 2002. Splitting his time between Oakland and Philly, he hit a career-high 20 home runs, walking in almost 20% of his plate appearances and limiting his strikeout rate to just 24%.

After a successful tenure in Oakland, he was traded to the Phillies where he played in just the latter half of the 2002 season. Traded to Boston for the late Josh Hancock, he served as a part-time player in 2003 for the Red Sox in what would ultimately be his last season in the big leagues.

In 2007, after his playing career had come to an end, Giambi was named in the infamous Mitchell Report, being labelled as one of the many players who accepted PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs) during their playing career. This did not come as a shock to the baseball world as Giambi himself admitted to the use of steroids in 2005, two whole years earlier.

Giambi was also featured in the 2011 film “Moneyball” featuring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. The movie focused on an analytical process of putting together a competitive team that the Oakland A’s began using in the 2002 season. He was played by Nick Porrazzo in the film.
