It can be easy to overlook those international prospects that sign for a relative pittance. The big names and large signing bonuses draw a great deal of attention, but there are dozens of other players that sign without much attention. That would normally be the case with the news that the New York Yankees had signed a pitcher from the Dominican Republic named Yordy Luciano.

He received just $10,000 as a signing bonus, an amount that Yankees’ ownership could easily forget in a jacket pocket. And, at 20 years old, he is not the type of prospect that one would typically imagine would play much of a part in the team’s future.

New York Yankees fulfill dream for Yordy Luciano

Those major league dreams typically have a timeline in the Dominican Republic. Usually, once a player passes their 18th birthday and remains unsigned, they have lost their chance. It is time to focus on something else as they just did not have enough to stand out and get that hoped for chance.

But Luciano refused to give up. As Hector Gomez noted on Twitter, he participated in over 50 tryouts, hearing ‘no’ each time. It would be enough to make even the most determined person question whether or not they had the necessary skills. And Luciano probably had those same doubts.

All it takes is one team. He found that through his determination and refusal to throw in the towel. He went to tryout after tryout, taking those rejections in stride. Finally, after years, he heard the answer he wanted – yes.

No one knows how Luciano will fare with the Yankees. Although he has his chance, it is a longshot that he will ever appear in the majors. But any failures will not be from a lack of effort and determination – Luciano has already proven that much.

The New York Yankees have fulfilled a dream for Yordy Luciano. If hard work and determination matter for anything, he will be a star.
