Stephen A. Smith learns Jeff Passan does not control New York Yankees
One can understand why people would link Derek Jeter to the New York Yankees front office after his abrupt departure from the Marlins. After all, Jeter is a Yankees’ icon, and was reportedly frustrated by the Marlins’ refusal to spend the money needed to win. A reunion would seemingly make sense.
That reunion also makes sense to ESPN’s resident blowhard Stephen A. Smith, who proceeded to rant in his usual fashion about how Jeter was not yet a member of the Yankees to Jeff Passan. Passan, in his usual fashion, reminded him that he does not tell anyone where to work.
Jeff Passan cannot force Derek Jeter to the New York Yankees
To be fair, Smith did have a point. If Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman are still members of the Yankees’ organization, then there would certainly be room for Jeter. That is, provided that Jeter wants to be involved in the Yankees front office.
That is the big question. After all, he did leave the Marlins on Monday. Although he had spent his entire playing career with the Yankees, it does not make sense to immediately see if there is an opening. It makes sense to take some time off, evaluate his options, and determine his best course of action.
One thing is clear however – that course of action will not be determined by Passan. He will not be telling Jeter what to do or where to go, no matter what Stephen A. Smith may think. Frankly, Jeter likely would not care what either of them thinks his next move should be either.
Stephen A. Smith is like most New York Yankees fans and wants Derek Jeter with the franchise. But Jeff Passan cannot make that happen.
