Michael Conforto an interesting fit for Colorado Rockies
It is no secret that the Colorado Rockies need major league caliber players throughout their roster. Likewise, it is not a secret that their tendency to keep the same players, or bring back those who had been in their organization before, is not working. It is time for the Rockies to go outside of the organization to find pieces if they are going to actually contend.
That is starting to be the case. The Rockies have already been linked to Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber during the offseason, showing that they are looking to change their modus operandi. Now there is another outfielder in the mix, as the Rockies are also reportedly interested in Michael Conforto.
Colorado Rockies reportedly targeting another outfielder
There is no question that the Rockies could stand to upgrade their outfield. Charlie Blackmon is getting older and may be better suited for the designated hitter role going forward. Neither Raimel Tapia nor Garrett Hampson have shown that they can be part of the answer moving forward, although both are still relatively young.
This may be the time to buy in on Conforto for the Rockies. He had a down year by his standards in 2021, producing a .232/.344/.384 batting line in his 479 plate appearances, hitting 14 homers and 20 doubles. Add in the fact that he received the Qualifying Offer, and any team signing him would have to give up a draft pick, and Conforto could be a bargain.
That would be a benefit to the Rockies. They need all the help they can get, and Conforto’s ability to play either corner outfield spot can make a difference. The Rockies would have a bit more flexibility as it comes to filling out their roster while potentially rotating outfielders through the DH spot as Blackmon spends some time in right.
Obviously the Rockies need more than Conforto or any of the other outfielders they have been linked to. At best, they would be replacing Trevor Story with one of those options. For a team that thinks they are going to contend, the Rockies need to do a lot of shopping. But looking outside the organization, and targeting help in the outfield, is a great start.
The Colorado Rockies are reportedly interested in Michael Conforto. As they clearly need help in the outfield, he would be an interesting fit.
