The New York Mets have brought back someone already familiar with the organization on a minor league deal, reuniting with Johneshwy Fargas after a brief stint together last season, according to the player.

The 27-year-old Fargas announced he was back as a part of the New York Mets organization with a tweet. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB draft, Fargas finally made his Major League debut with the Mets on May 17, 2021. However, he would see action in just seven games with the Mets, logging 22 plate appearances before being placed on the injured list on May 26 with a left AC joint sprain. After completing his rehab assignments in the minor leagues, he was eventually placed on waivers.

During his time in New York, Fargas slashed .286/.286/.524 with six total hits. However, four of those hits went for extra-bases (three doubles and a triple), showing that Fargas and his speed could be a weapon on the bases when he gets on.

He was picked up by the Chicago Cubs and saw slightly more action, racking up 32 plate appearances in 15 contests while bouncing between Wrigley Field and Triple-A Iowa. Only one of his seven hits went for extra bases with the Cubs, but it was a triple.

In his minor league career, Fargas has 252 stolen bases, including 50 swipes during the 2019 season for Double-A Richmond. He has four MiLB seasons with 40 stolen bases or more.

With the Mets adding plenty of free agent firepower to their roster so far this offseason (including outfielders Mark Canha and Starling Marte), Fargas may have a hard time breaking into the lineup in the early stages of the season. However, if he can fare well at Triple-A and show he can bring a speed element to the organization, he could be an option for a call-up later in the season.

New York likely signed Fargas for depth purposes, but don’t be surprised if he gets a second chance at Citi Field sometime in 2022.
