Although he ultimately signed with the Houston Astros, it is being reported that the Atlanta Braves had “detailed conversations” with the Atlanta Braves about joining the team’s rotation for the 2022 campaign.

Can conversations with Justin Verlander give insight into what the Atlanta Braves are planning for the rest of the offseason?

With the MLB lockout now lifted and the hot stove once again lit, it is expected that the Atlanta Braves will do everything possible to bring first baseman Freddie Freeman back into the fold. However, according to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, the Braves also explored the possibilities of Justin Verlander being added the roster.

So it seems that the Braves are looking to add a “high-level starter” while keeping Freeman? That combination could certainly help Atlanta as it looks to defend its World Series crown. With the New York Mets overhauling their rotation and roster before the lockout commenced, there is no doubt that Atlanta’s division rivals look to be stronger. Adding to the rotation while keeping Freeman at first base would be a strong counter to New York’s pre-lockout moves.

There are still quality free agent starting pitchers available, but the question is how much Atlanta is willing to spend to keep Freeman and how much will be left over to ink a “high-level starter.” Can the Braves do enough to improve their roster while also keeping Freeman, who has been linked heavily to the Los Angeles Dodgers among other teams if he and Atlanta can’t come to an agreement.

While Atlanta fans are anxiously awaiting to see if Freeman will return to the Braves, it sounds as if they should also be watching to see if the team can bolster the rotation as well.
