The Los Angeles Dodgers desperately needed to do something with their rotation. While Julio Urias and Walker Buehler are a formidable duo, the Dodgers need far more if they are going to recapture the NL West. That is especially the case with the uncertainty surrounding Trevor Bauer and when he will return.
The Dodgers took a major step towards shoring up the rotation on Friday. Clayton Kershaw is back, signing a one year deal to remain in Los Angeles.
Clayton Kershaw returns to Los Angeles Dodgers
Kershaw’s return was not a given. While the Dodgers were the clear favorites for his services, it was possible that he would sign with the Rangers. His hometown is close to Arlington and it was possible that he would choose to remain close to his family. As it was, Kershaw said that he wanted to talk to his family before making any any decisions.
When healthy, Kershaw is still a top of the rotation starter. Even if he is not the dominant ace who has been the best pitcher in the game during his prime, he is still someone who can make a difference. He posted a solid 3.55 ERA and a 1.019 WHiP in his 121.2 innings in 2021, striking out 144 batters with just 21 walks.
This one year deal also allows Kershaw to potentially get a better contract next year. While he would be older, if he can prove to be healthy, it is possible that he can get one more large payday. Max Scherzer was able to break the bank with the Mets, giving plenty of hope that Kershaw could do the same if he can stay on the mound.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have brought Clayton Kershaw back home. The Dodgers are the only team he should be pitching for.
