Derek Jeter was part-owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins up until two weeks ago when he abruptly left the team. Since then, it was rumored that he left due to the team not being willing to spend money. Jeter’s former teammate with the New York Yankees, CC Sabathia, told all on why Jeter left.

The main reason: The Marlins did not want to sign free agent outfielder Nick Castellanos.

CC Sabathia says that Derek Jeter left the Miami Marlins because they wouldn’t sign Nick Castellanos

On his R2C2 podcast, former New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia revealed that Nick Castellanos was a big reason why Derek Jeter left the Miami Marlins. “(Castellanos is) a beast,” said Sabathia. “I know Jeter wanted him bad.”

Sabathia also added that Jeter is “pissed” that the Marlins, once again, have “bad ownership.”

“The Marlins are the Marlins,” said Sabathia. “No matter what you try to do to make them better, at the end of the day there’s just always been bad ownership. Jeter did everything he could, he lined everything up for him and this is the year you sign Castellanos. They’ve got a bunch of pitching, Jazz Chisholm is a star, you’ve got Miguel Rojas playing short. Seems good, like really good, he built a really good team. The minor league organization is great, but it’s just time to spend money.

“I just feel bad for him because I know how much time he put into that and how serious he took that job and I know he’s pissed. Yeah, it sucks, but the Marlins are the Marlins.”

The Marlins made it to the playoffs with the expanded postseason slate in 2020, as they went 31-29 and clinched the six-seed in the eight-seed NL playoffs. They even swept the Chicago Cubs (the no. 3 seed) in the NL Wild Card round but the Marlins, themselves, were swept in the NLDS by the Atlanta Braves.

However, they regressed in 2021, going 67-95 and, frankly, they don’t look much better entering Spring Training in 2022.
