It seemed inevitable that Anthony Rizzo would return to the New York Yankees. He spoke fondly of his time with the team, even if it was just two months, all but saying that he would be returning to the Bronx back in December. Of course, as the lockout was happening at the time, nothing could officially be done.

That is not the case now. Despite the Yankees being connected to Freddie Freeman and Matt Olson, they know what they had. Rizzo is back, having signed a two year deal worth $32 million, which includes an opt-out after this season.

New York Yankees have their first baseman in Anthony Rizzo

Rizzo had a relatively solid showing in 2021. He produced a .248/.344/.440 batting line in his 576 plate appearances between the Cubs and Yankees, hitting 22 homers and 23 doubles. While that may not seem overly impressive, it is better than what the Yankees had gotten from the position prior to his arrival at the trade deadline.

The opt-out is a major addition for Rizzo as well. A lifetime .268/.369/.481 hitter who averages approximately 30 homers a year, it is entirely possible that he can bounce back in the 2022 season now that he has more certainty over his future. As he is 32 years old, and still in his theoretical prime, it would not be a surprise to see Rizzo return to form.

Should that happen, he would set himself up for another trek through free agency. Jose Abreu and Josh Bell are the hypothetical top options at first for next offseason, but a return to his career norms would put Rizzo amongst those players as well. If that does not happen, then he is locked in for $16 million in 2023.

The Yankees are certainly hoping that he returns to form as well. They have been active lately, revamping their infield in a hope to return to the postseason. Rizzo gives them another power bat which they certainly need.
