The Baltimore Orioles are not going to contend in 2022. That much is clear right from the beginning. But that does not mean that the Orioles are willing to sit on their hands and have Jordan Lyles be their biggest signing of the offseason. Instead, they are reportedly interested in Carlos Correa and offered him a ten year contract worth $300 million.

On the surface, this offer does not make sense. The Orioles are a moribund franchise playing in what may be the best division in baseball. Winning 60 games in 2022 would be an accomplishment. The biggest drama around the team will involve which players are traded at the deadline.

Carlos Correa actually makes sense for the Baltimore Orioles

That may not be the case for long. There is actually something brewing in Baltimore. Adley Rutschman will likely be in the majors by the middle of May. Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle are a solid pair of young and controllable bats. If they can extend Trey Mancini, that is a good core, especially if Correa was added to that.

The rotation also has potential. John Means has established himself as one of the better arms in the game. DL Hall and Grayson Rodriguez should be in the majors in 2023. If the Orioles can add another top starter, the rotation could be relatively formidable next season.

The same could be said of their bullpen as well. Baltimore has some solid pieces there as well, especially if Hunter Harvey can ever stay healthy. The bullpen, as with the rest of the roster, needs work, but it is not irreversibly broken.

Sometimes, it just takes one player to jumpstart the rebuilding process. This is something that teams have done in the past, adding a star player to a seemingly miserable roster to show that they are serious about contending. The Rockies did that exact same thing on Wednesday when they inked Kris Bryant to a seven year contract. It makes sense for the Orioles to look to do the same with Carlos Correa.

The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly made an offer to Carlos Correa. It is a signing that would make sense based on their future potential.
