New York Yankees rotation already takes hit with Domingo German
The New York Yankees already have questions when it comes to their pitching staff. Gerrit Cole is an undisputed ace and one of the best pitchers in the game, but there is not much behind him. The rest of the rotation is either unproven, riddled with injury questions, or both.
Domingo German is one of those injury questions. While the Yankees were hoping that he could make a difference in their rotation in 2022, his return is going to be delayed as he has been placed on the 60 day Injured List due to shoulder problems that popped up in January.
Domingo German injury hurts New York Yankees rotation plans
German was going to be a question mark even if he was healthy to start the season. He seemed to be someone that could be a fixture in the middle of the Yankees’ rotation after a strong 2019 season, but has seen his career become derailed since. His 2020 season was lost due to a suspension for violating the league’s domestic violence policy and shoulder issues limited him to just 98.1 innings last year.
He was not exactly great when he was healthy enough to take the ball. German posted a 4.58 ERA and a 1.180 WHiP in those 98.1 innings, striking out 98 batters with 27 walks. His ever-present home run issues were prevalent again as he allowed 17 homers last year as well.
Yet, he is also someone that the Yankees, at the very least, know what they have. German is a solid middle to the back of the rotation arm, someone who can help round out a pitching staff. Now they need to find a way to replace him while looking to upgrade their rotation at the same time.
The New York Yankees could not afford any losses in their rotation. Domingo German starting the year on the Injured List is a major loss.
