Seiya Suzuki made his much-anticipated debut for the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon. While Cubs fans were waiting to see what Suzuki would do on the field, it was what happened in the dugout that drew the most attention during their matinee game against the Colorado Rockies.

While doing an interview on live television, Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki was nearly hit by a baseball fouled off by teammate Willson Contreras

In the fourth inning, after Suzuki had been pulled from the game following an 0-for-2 day at the plate (both strikeouts), the prized free agent signing from Japan was doing an interview with Elise Menaker of Marquee Sports Network (televising the Chicago Cubs). Standing alongside his translator, Suzuki had just finished answering a question about his debut when a foul ball off the bat of Willson Contreras came screaming into the dugout.

You can see the near-incident below, as well as the priceless reaction from Suzuki on a moment that could have been much worse than it was.

Fresh off signing a five-year, $85 million deal with the Cubs, Suzuki had a rough day at the plate in his debut, but reportedly spent an extra half-hour in the batting cage after exiting the game and surviving a near-miss in the dugout.

“I just got pissed off a little bit from those two unfortunate at-bats,” Suzuki admitted.

Baseball fans are excited to see what Suzuki will not only bring to the Cubs, but also to the sport in 2022. There are plenty of projections about what Suzuki could do at the plate in his first MLB season, including a slash line of .286/.386/.528 with 29 home runs in Steamer’s look into the crystal ball.
