Starlin Castro’s major league career appeared to be over. The Washington Nationals had been adamant that he would never play another game for them after he was suspended for domestic violence. They proved to be true to their word, releasing him once his 30 game suspension was over. As he was left unsigned, his time in the league was seemingly done.
But all it takes is one team willing to give a player a look. In Castro’s case, that team may be the Miami Marlins, who are reportedly in talks with the disgraced infielder to bring him back.
Miami Marlins considering reunion with Starlin Castro
The Marlins have been looking to upgrade their lineup. They signed Avisail Garcia and Jorge Soler, while trading for Jacob Stallings, to do just that. Castro would presumably push Brian Anderson to the outfield, an area that was in desperate need of help last season.
It is, however, fair to wonder how much Castro can actually help the lineup. He was not exactly lighting the universe on fire prior to his suspension and subsequent release. Castro had produced a .283/.333/.375 batting line in his 346 plate appearances, hitting three homers and 20 doubles.
If nothing else, Castro does provide a depth option at second and third. He has proven to be adept at making contact throughout his career and not just on the diamond. The Marlins would have more flexibility on their bench and in the lineup with his presence.
But his presence may not be worth it. Castro’s transgressions are not going to be forgotten, especially considering how fans have reacted to Marcell Ozuna and Trevor Bauer. Castro, at the very least, had disappeared from the spotlight after being let go, but that will not help him earn back the respect of the fans.
The Miami Marlins are looking under every rock possible to improve their lineup. They must be living under one if Starlin Castro is the answer.
