The New York Mets have high hopes for the 2022 season. As Steve Cohen has opened his checkbook, the Mets were able to upgrade in almost every facet of their roster. Having a pair of aces such as Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer to front the rotation can make a major difference in their postseason hopes.
But we all know what they say about the best laid plans. deGrom battled injuries that scuttled what could have been a historic season last year. Now he is set to miss significant time once again as he is dealing with a stress reaction in his scapula.
Jacob deGrom loss a major blow for New York Mets
The Mets are in a better spot to weather losing deGrom this year. Scherzer would be the top starter on virtually any other team and he will step into his accustomed role. Chris Bassitt is a strong second starter, and there is plenty of depth in the rotation. Losing deGrom will not be the fatal blow that it was in 2021.
That is not to say that he will not be missed. He was dominant in 2021, posting a 1.08 ERA and a 0.554 WHiP in his 92 innings, striking out 146 batters with 11 walks. deGrom had continued that dominance in spring training, allowing one run on five hits over five innings, striking out ten batters.
It is unclear as to how long deGrom will be out. According to the Mets, he will stop throwing for up to four weeks, and then they will get another image of the area. Once that happens, they will have a better idea as to when he can come back.
This also could have an impact on deGrom’s plans for 2023. He had previously indicated that he would trigger his opt-out clause in hopes of landing a long term deal with the Mets. This could still happen if he pitches well once he returns from injury. However, if he struggles upon his return, or ends up missing significant time, he may be better off staying with his current deal.
Jacob deGrom is likely to miss significant time this season due to his shoulder injury. It is a major blow to the New York Mets hopes for 2022.
