The New York Mets are not done when it comes to upgrading their team. They were already looking for help in the bullpen, but in the wake of Jacob deGrom’s injury and questions about Max Scherzer’s availability for Opening Day, the rotation has become a question mark. It makes sense that the Mets would be looking to find pieces.

Likewise, the Mets have several players that do not seem to have a role on their roster. There have been rumors that Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis could be on the trade block throughout most of the offseason. As the Padres have depth in the rotation, and a need to upgrade their bench, it is not a surprise that the two teams would be discussing a trade.

New York Mets potential blockbuster raising eyebrows

According to reports, that is the case. Jon Heyman reported that there is a possible trade where the Mets would Smith to the Padres for Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan. That part makes some sense. The part that is raising eyebrows is the inclusion of Eric Hosmer and $25 million to help cover his salary.

Paddack and Pagan would be perfect fits for the Mets. Paddack would be a solid addition to the middle of their rotation and a young arm that they may be able to get to reach his potential. Pagan is the type of reliever that the Mets need in a setup role. However, that would be an overpay for Smith.

Hosmer is entirely involved as a way to offload his salary. The problem is that he does not serve a purpose for the Mets either. Pete Alonso is entrenched at first. Robinson Cano is likely to spend most of the season as their designated hitter, provided that he does not get suspended for PEDs again. There just is not a fit for Hosmer in New York.

Maybe the Mets can find a trade partner for him. After all, $34 million over four years for his services is a lot more palatable than $59 million. But it also depends on how desperate a team is for a first baseman at this point. The Mets may end up just eating the rest of that contract to add Paddack and Pagan provided this trade actually occurs.

There is a rumored trade between the New York Mets and San Diego Padres. While it would fill some holes, the deal also raises eyebrows.
