Rachel Balkovec is going to generate far more attention than any other minor league manager. She was going to make history the moment that she set foot on the diamond with the Tampa Tarpons, the New York Yankees Single-A affiliate. In doing so, she became the first female manager in the history of affiliated baseball, a journey that has been more than a decade in the making.

Her debut could not have gone much better. The Tarpons came from behind to take a 9-6 victory to give Balkovec a win in her first game on the bench. Anthony Garcia had a three run homer as part of a four RBI night, and Antonio Gomez drove in three runs to make certain that her debut was a success.

Typically, wins and losses do not matter when comes to the minor leagues. It is a matter of developing players and doing everything possible to ensure that those prospects reach their full potential. As the minors are about shaping the future of the major league roster, that is truly what is important.

But that may not be the case for Balkovec. She is going to have every move examined with a magnifying glass due to being the first female manager in the game. As the Tarpons were 73-43 in 2021, anything less than a similar record could be viewed as a disappointment.

Balkovec is certainly used to being under the microscope. She was the first full time female strength and conditioning coach in affiliated ball, and has spent more than a decade in various roles. Her knowledge of the game and mental toughness cannot be questioned. And yet, she will have to silence the doubters every single day.
