It is seemingly a matter of time before Brett Gardner returns to the New York Yankees. He has generated some interest in free agency, with the Blue Jays specifically having been reportedly looking to bring him in, but Gardner has seemingly been clear about where he wants to be. As he has spent his entire career in pinstripes, it is not a surprise that he wants to return to New York.

Gardner is certainly looking to make his return to the diamond at some point this year. According to reports, he is continuing to work out and stay in shape, just waiting for the phone to ring with an offer.

New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner staying ready

Gardner ended up playing far more than anyone could have anticipated last season. He was even moderately useful in that time last year, posting a .222/.327/.362 batting line in his 461 plate appearances, hitting ten homers and 16 doubles. He was also fairly useful in center, only costing the Yankees one run in his 105 games at the position.

It is entirely probable that Gardner can still play a major role with the Yankees this year as well. Aaron Hicks is hardly a paragon of health and is likely to need a stint on the Injured List in the next few weeks based on his track record.

When that happens, Gardner will be ready. He will likely need a bit of time in extended spring training and a stint in the minors before he is ready. However, as Gardner also knows exactly what he needs to do in order to prepare for the season, it is not likely to take all that much time before he would be able to appear on a major league roster.
