There was no guarantee that Alec Bohm would start the 2022 season with the Philadelphia Phillies. His struggles last season had led to a demotion to the minors and Bryson Stott was expected to take over as the Phillies’ primary third baseman. Bohm was, at best, a bench piece for the franchise.

It is also apparent that there is zero love lost between Bohm and the organization. He made his thoughts abundantly clear for anyone capable of reading lips during the Phillies’ game against the Mets on Monday.

Alec Bohm clearly wants to leave Philadelphia Phillies

Yes, that was Bohm putting a profane emphasis on how he hates Philadelphia. The feeling may well be mutual after he has failed to live up to expectations, making him yet another highly touted Phillies prospect that did not deliver on his potential.

To say that 2021 was a disappointment would be an understatement. Bohm followed his runner-up finish in the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year vote with a disappointing .247/.305/.342 batting line in his 417 plate appearances, hitting seven homers and 15 doubles. Any pop in his bat had disappeared while his strikeout rate increased.

Bohm seemed to be the type of player that needed a change of scenery even before this season started. His time appears to have come and gone before it really had a chance to begin. And yet, he still had value as a trade chip for a rebuilding team.

Now the Phillies’ hand has been forced. Bohm’s statement is going to lead to a truly visceral reaction from the hometown fans. After all, this is a group that booed and threw snowballs at Santa Claus. Saying how much he hates being in Philadelphia will stick with him throughout his playing career.
