The New York Mets find themselves in an interesting position when it comes to Brandon Nimmo. Their primary center fielder and on base machine has stated that he wants to return to New York. And yet, it is fair to wonder if the Mets themselves feel that he is worth retaining.

That is especially the case as everything is silent when it comes to a possible extension. According to reports, the Mets have yet to approach Nimmo and his representatives about a possible extension, despite his interest in staying with the organization.

New York Mets not engaging Brandon Nimmo just yet

Nimmo has been a solid part of the Mets lineup when he has been on the diamond. He has produced a .267/.392/.446 batting line in his 1710 career plate appearances heading into Monday, hitting 47 homers and 77 doubles. His respectable pop, ability to get on base, and capability of playing anywhere in the outfield make him a valuable part of their roster.

The problem has been keeping Nimmo in the lineup. He has appeared in over 100 games just once in his career and has only had two fully healthy seasons. Nimmo has been productive when he has played, but that has not been often enough.

The Mets also have other possible options to play in center. Mark Canha and Starling Marte could easily shift over, taking over in the event of an injury or if the team decides to let Nimmo walk. Despite Steve Cohen’s willingness to spend on the roster, they are not throwing money around at just anyone.

It is possible that the Mets begin those extension talks during the season. They may well want to see that he can stay healthy before having that conversation. Or, it could simply be that they do not feel that Nimmo’s health history makes a potential extension worthwhile.

The New York Mets have yet to discuss an extension with Brandon Nimmo. While he has been productive, his health woes make any deal a risky proposition.
