Typically, players do not like to negotiate a contract in the middle of the season. It is an unnecessary distraction, and even if they are interested in an extension, most players would prefer to wait until the offseason. San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove is not most players in this aspect.
As it is, Musgrove is slated to reach free agency at the end of this season. However, he wants to stay with the Padres, to the point where he is willing to negotiate during the year if the team sends an enticing enough offer.
Joe Musgrove willing to discuss deal with San Diego Padres in season
Musgrove has been a revelation since joining the Padres. He had been a solid pitcher during his time with the Pirates, but was able to take a major step forward after he was acquired by San Diego. He has a 3.05 ERA and a 1.048 WHiP in his 200.1 innings, striking out 224 batters with 55 walks. That is the type of production that any team would want to keep in their rotation.
To this point, the Padres have yet to reach out to Musgrove’s representatives. There are likely several reasons as to why that did not happen during the offseason, as the lockout and their quest to add another arm to their starting five put any such talks on the back burner.
That does not mean that the Padres do not want to bring him back. Musgrove could become a priority now that the roster is reasonably settled and the season has begun. The Padres have also been known to act quickly and aggressively, so a sudden flurry of discussions about an extension would not be out of the question.
Joe Musgrove has stated that he would negotiate a long term deal with the San Diego Padres during the season. Maybe that deal comes together soon.
