There was a time when Julio Teheran seemed to be a key part of the Atlanta Braves future. He had developed into a solid middle of the rotation arm, a two time All Star who could occasionally dominate. The Angels were hoping he would be the same sort of arm for them when he signed prior to the 2020 season, someone that could help solidify a rotation that had been a sore spot over the years.

Instead, the last two years were not kind to Teheran. He contracted COVID in the pandemic shortened season and was not himself when he was able to take the mound. Teheran had a promising first start for the Tigers in 2021 after signing a minor league deal, but shoulder woes sidelined him thereafter.

It is not a surprise that Teheran did not have many suitors. He was a part of a trio of arms, including Anibal Sanchez and Erasmo Ramirez, to hold a showcase for interested teams, showing that they still had something to offer. However, while Sanchez and Ramirez both earned contracts, Teheran continued to languish in free agency.

His time in free agency had finally come to an end. Teheran has signed with the Staten Island FerryHawks, an expansion team in the Atlantic League. Not only did he sign on Opening Day for the FerryHawks, but he made the start as well.

It is possible that Teheran can parlay this stint with the FerryHawks into another major league opportunity. If he can perform well in the Atlantic League, that major league call could come this year. Teams are desperate for pitching and Teheran may be able to help someone.

Likewise, it is possible that he is able to start the second half of his professional life. Although he has 1396.1 major league innings, he is still just 31 years old. He could return to form and find his way back to being a solid middle of the rotation arm again. The journey back has now begun.
