Things got out of hand in the ninth inning of the Saturday afternoon game between the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. In the end, shortly after a walk-off Yankees win had been secured, two of the biggest faces of the Yankees tried to diffuse the situation.
Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton tried to calm down New York Yankees fans as they threw items at members of the Cleveland Guardians
After Cleveland’s Steven Kwan ran into the outfield wall with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning chasing what would be a game-tying double from Isiah Kiner-Falefa and had, according to The New York Post, “gone down with an injury,” Kwan’s teammate, Myles Straw, jumped onto the outfield fence to let New York Yankees fans know his feelings about their reaction to Kwan’s injury.
After things settled down somewhat, the next batter, pinch hitter Gleyber Torres came through with a single on a 1-2 pitch, giving the Yankees a 5-4 comeback win.
However, it wasn’t long after the single from Torres that Yankees fans started reminding Cleveland’s players that they had lost, showering them with them with “trash and empty beer cans,” according to The New York Post. Cleveland right fielder Oscar Mercado turned to confront the fans and, along with some of his teammates, was quickly shielded from more debris by members of the Yankees and security personnel.
Eventually, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, who had been celebrating with Torres in in the infield after his game-winning single, rushed to the outfield and appeared to tell the fans to calm down and move on.
You can see in the video below when Judge notices that something is going on in the outfield and he decides to do what he can to stop it.
Mercado described the situation and his reaction after the game.
While it was a beautiful win for New York, the scene in the outfield was ugly on every level.
