Benches clearing situations in baseball typically end up with people milling about and pretending to want to fight. Maybe there are a couple of pushes and players yelling at each other, but the days of punches being thrown have, for the most part, disappeared. But no one told that to Boston Red Sox prospect Tyreque Reed.

Reed, a 25 year old first baseman/designated hitter playing for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, was hit by a pitch from Binghampton Rumble Ponies starter Marcel Renteria. The two exchanged words, and whatever was said infuriated Reed, who then charged the mound.

Boston Red Sox prospect Tyreque Reed ignites a true base brawl

As Reed is listed as being 6’4″ tall and weighing 250 pounds, he may not have been the best player to be jawing at for the 5’11”, 185 Renteria. Walking towards him and mouthing off while Reed was heading to first was not the smartest idea. Neither was standing his ground instead of sprinting towards the outfield when Reed came for him.

The next thing Renteria likely knew was that he was on the ground. Reed belted him with a haymaker, leaving him dazed and crumbled near the first baseline. That set off the brawl, with Reed shrugging off the first player to attempt to grab him before he was eventually dragged to the other side of the mound.

Unsurprisingly, Reed was ejected from the game, as was Rumble Ponies’ third baseman Brett Baty. It is actually somewhat surprising that other players were not ejected, such as Renteria, but his being on the receiving end of Reed’s haymaker was likely considered punishment enough by the umpire. Of course, Renteria was in no condition to continue pitching after stopping Reed’s first with the side of his head either.

dark. Next. Red Sox cover themselves in ignobility

Boston Red Sox minor league Tyreque Reed set off a brawl on Thursday night when he flattened Marcel Renteria. It had to be seen to be believed.
