The New York Yankees and Major League Baseball want it to go away. As far as the league is concerned, the cheating scandal is done; the Astros and Red Sox have been punished. The Yankees’ involvement in anything is irrelevant, something that is in the past and should remain there. MLB is claiming that there is nothing to see there, and both the league and Yankees are fighting to make sure that remains the case.

But that will not be the case. The letter that MLB sent to the Yankees about their own cheating issues is about to be unsealed despite their ardent protestations. Likewise, despite those protestations, there was little reason to expect anything new to come out.

What is in the letter MLB sent to the New York Yankees?

That was the case until Monday. Both MLB and the Yankees are attempting to change the court’s mind. The Yankees are claiming that the report will cause “significant and irreparable reputational harm” while MLB says that releasing the letter could “cause significant embarrassment” to everyone involved.

And now, a lot more focus is going to be on that letter. What exactly is in there that the league and the Yankees do not want the fans to know about? Are they as dirty, or worse, than the Astros and Red Sox? Did the league really make an example of the Astros while sweeping the Yankees sins under the rug?

AstroGate, and the resulting fallout, has ruined careers. Carlos Beltran was let go by the Mets before he ever managed a game and has not sniffed a managerial opportunity since. Former Astros GM Jeff Luhnow remains outside of the game with other teams refusing to consider him for a front office role.

Now that scab is being ripped open once more. The wounds of the cheating scandal are being laid bare, with the potential for another bombshell to emerge. The Yankees and MLB appear to have something to hide, something they are desperate to keep under wraps. But what could be that much of a shock where they are fighting tooth and nail to keep the letter sealed?
