The Minnesota Twins were the surprising victors of the Carlos Correa Sweepstakes. He had signed a three year deal that is, theoretically, worth $105.3 million. However, as there were opt-outs after each of the first two seasons, the expectation was that this would essentially be a one year deal, allowing Correa to return to free agency and sign with a different team.

That may not be the case. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Correa has already expressed a willingness to sign a longer term deal to remain with the Twins for the foreseeable future. Those conversations have involved team president Derek Falvey, GM Thad Levine, and manager Rocco Baldelli.

Minnesota Twins may have Carlos Correa for long term

This is obviously the scenario that the Twins had hoped for when they inked Correa to that contract. The hope was that Correa would fall in love with the area and what they are building in Minnesota, that he would want to be a long term part of the solution.

Thus far, that has been the case. While it is uncommon for players to push for a long term extension within the season, Correa has not been shy about his desire to remain with the Twins. Although Scott Boras is not one who typically signs such deals, he has been willing to do so if his players are adamant about remaining where they are.

For the Twins, this would be an opportunity to lock up one of the top players in the game when he is on the diamond. Correa is a two time All Star and a Gold Glove winner, a power hitting shortstop who is just about to enter his hypothetical prime. For Correa, this could be his chance to get that hoped for payday without having to risk another trek through free agency.

However, Correa would be another gamble for the Twins. They already have a player in Byron Buxton who is an injury risk. While Correa has been healthy over the past two seasons, he only has two seasons where he has appeared in more than 110 games. Nonetheless, this is the type of gamble the Twins need to take if they are going to work to return to being a postseason contender.
