Quick question – who ranks second in bWAR for the Detroit Tigers in 2022? Chances are, even if given several guesses, Michael Fulmer would not be one of the names that come to mind. Nonetheless, his 0.5 bWAR heading into Friday trails only Austin Meadows on the Tigers.
It is clear as to why Fulmer is regarded so highly in those calculations. He has yet to allow a run in his 7.2 innings entering Friday, giving up only three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters. He has notched a save and two holds in that time while clearly ranking as second in line when it comes to save opportunities.
Detroit Tigers need to make switch in ninth inning
The ninth inning would not seem to be a major concern for the Tigers. After all, Gregory Soto has allowed just one earned run in six innings, his blown save coming due to a comedy of errors from his defense. He cannot be blamed for defensive antics that would have been more at home during the Major League movies as opposed to a major league diamond.
However, Soto has been a tightrope when he has come into the game. He has allowed five hits and four walks in his six innings, with just four strikeouts. He has notched three saves, but as the Tigers are looking to break out of their early season malaise, they need to ensure that whatever leads they have in the ninth stick.
It is a role that Fulmer does have experience with. He had notched 14 saves last season as he served as part of a co-closer role with Soto. Considering the Tigers’ overall issues with scoring runs this season, and Soto’s shaky command, Detroit needs something that can be counted on to maintain those few leads they may have. That is Michael Fulmer.
The Detroit Tigers need to take a closer look at the ninth inning. It is time that Michael Fulmer is given their closer role on a permanent basis.
