There is one highlight that everyone thinks of on May 7th. On that day in 2016, New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon did the impossible – belting a home run while simultaneously ending James Shields’ career. Alas, the universal designated hitter has robbed us of those moments going forward.

Colon’s home run would be enough to make May 7 an interesting day in the history of any team. However, his swing of the bat and improbable home run is just the tip of the iceberg for the Mets over the past decade.

A day of insanity for the New York Mets

Colon was not the first time that May 7 stood out with the Mets. That was also the day of Matt Harvey’s infamous “Bloody Nose” game, where he was perfect through seven innings before he ended up firing a one hit shutout with 12 strikeouts. Given what we know about Harvey and his drug problems, that game stands out even more these days.

May 7 was also the day that it was clear that a change needed to be made on the bench. That was the day of the infamous “Rat or Raccoon” incident, with Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil getting into an altercation in the tunnel leading to the locker room. Although they tried to play it off as a discussion over some interloper in the tunnel, there was plenty of speculation about a physical altercation between the two.

Unfortunately, today’s game has been postponed due to weather as rain continues to hit Philadelphia. That leaves the Mets without a chance to make history or to have some sort of notable incident occur on the field. But this is May 7 and these are the Mets – something could very well happen anyway.

May 7 has been quite the day in New York Mets history over the past decade. A rainout may be the only thing keeping another memorable moment from happening.
