It was a matter of time before Alek Thomas made his major league debut. The Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect had a solid start to his 2022 season in Triple-A and just needed an opportunity. However, as the Diamondbacks’ outfield had been performing well, he was stuck biding his time.
That time has come. Thomas has been called up to the majors to make his debut as Carson Kelly has been placed on the Injured List. This move likely means that Daulton Varsho, the Diamondbacks’ primary center fielder, will see more time behind the plate for the duration of Kelly’s injury.
Alek Thomas getting his chance with Arizona Diamondbacks
A consensus top 100 prospect for each of the past three years, Thomas rocketed up the rankings on the strength of his impressive 2021 performance. He put together a .313/.394/.559 batting line in his 495 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting 18 homers and 29 doubles while stealing 12 bases.
Although he has not matched that production thus far, Thomas still had a strong start to his time in Triple-A this year. He had put together a .277/.362/.495 batting line in his 116 plate appearances, hitting four homers and eight doubles while stealing three bases.
That performance is indicative of what is expected of Thomas moving forward. He is lauded for his solid all around game, his compact swing generating plenty of line drives. Even if he is not expected to be a power hitter, he should still reach the 20 homer mark with consistency while his plus speed will allow him to fill out the stat sheet.
Thomas is also the beginning of what could be an impressive wave of prospects for the Diamondbacks. They have plenty of impressive prospects, both offensively and in the pitching staff. While their .500 record heading into Sunday is solid, players such as Thomas are expected to bring better days with them.
That future is set to start now. The Arizona Diamondbacks have brought Alek Thomas to the majors to make his debut.
