MLB Power Rankings: Where teams stand after the Mother’s Day milestone
By Kevin Henry
10. San Francisco Giants
San Francisco has lost nine of its last 11 games and sits tied for third place in the National League West with the Colorado Rockies (a team they host for three games starting on Monday night). One of the big reasons for the recent issues has been the Giants defense, as they have logged 14 errors in their first 22 games. However, that issue seems to be tightening up as the Giants have played error-free baseball over their last six contests. Something to watch: San Francisco’s bullpen has already thrown 122.0 innings, the fourth-highest number of any MLB team.
9. Minnesota Twins
We warned MLB pitchers about it in this article, but this is the time of year when Jorge Polanco starts to heat up. His two-run, third-inning single on Sunday turned out to be the game-winner in a 4-3 home victory over the Oakland A’s. Could Polanco be the player to hit the 1,000th home run in the history of Target Field? Opened in 2010, Minnesota players have hit 993 bombs in their home ballpark. Polanco sits 10th on the list with 30 in his home park, well behind the leader (Brian Dozier with 80).
8. St. Louis Cardinals
History will be made in St. Louis this week as the Baltimore Orioles pay a visit. They are the last MLB team to make an inaugural visit to Busch Stadium III since it opened in 2006. The irony, of course, is that the Orioles are the former St. Louis Browns, so it will be a bit of a homecoming for the franchise. Rookie Juan Yepez has hit safely in each of his first five MLB games, including a home run in San Francisco on Sunday.
7. Toronto Blue Jays
For all of the talk about the Toronto offense, the team enters Monday with a negative-10 run differential this season. The Blue Jays have lost five of their last seven games and has a big week ahead, visiting Yankee Stadium (following a Monday off day) for a two-game series on Tuesday before heading to Tampa Bay for a weekend series against the Rays.
6. Los Angeles Angels
Shohei Ohtani was 1-for-11 at the plate in a home weekend series against the Washington Nationals before hitting a game-tying, two-run double in the ninth, then scoring the winning run on Anthony Rendon’s single. The win kept the Angels on top of the American League West by a half-game over Houston.
