Michele Tafoya may be well known for getting answers on the sidelines of NFL games, but she missed the mark in a big way on Twitter when she decided to throw out an opinion on Los Angeles Angels designated hitter/pitcher Shohei Ohtani.
While watching Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels play on television, Michele Tafoya sent an ill-advised tweet
Tafoya departed from her well-known role with NBC and the network’s Sunday Night Football broadcast after January’s Super Bowl. Apparently, some of her current free time includes watching Los Angeles Angels television broadcasts. However, after the broadcasters shared some discussion time about reigning American League MVP Shohei Ohtani, Tafoya had seemingly had enough.
What exactly is it that Tafoya didn’t like? Perhaps it was the love shown for Ohtani after becoming the third Japanese player to hit 100 MLB home runs. Maybe it was the fact that many of the things baseball fans are seeing Ohtani do on the diamond haven’t been done in decades. Whatever it is, it obviously wasn’t enough to impress Tafoya, who simply wanted to watch the Angels play without the announcers talking about a generational talent.
The tweet caught the eye of Angels color man Mark Gubicza, who tipped his cap to Tafoya for being one of the thousands of MLB fans who tune in to watch Ohtani every night.
Tafoya’s tweet about Ohtani is the very definition of the word “ratio” when it is used in conjunction with Twitter. Nearly 1,100 quote tweets had been used in conjunction with the tweet, and they were all wondering exactly what Tafoya didn’t want to hear about one of the greatest players in the game today.
We all have our opinions, but MLB and its affiliates talking about Ohtani is one of the best marketing options for the league today. Ohtani’s presence and talents are certainly one of the best things going for the Angels, who entered Sunday tied for the top of the American League West standings.
Less talk about Ohtani? Actually, MLB needs to do more of it. If you don’t like it, there’s always the mute button.
