Royce Lewis was supposed to be a temporary answer when he was promoted to the majors. The Minnesota Twins prospect certainly has a bright future ahead of him, but he was on the major league roster until Carlos Correa was ready to return. Seemingly nothing was going to change that.
That has proven to be the case. Correa is set to be activated on Thursday, and once that happens, Lewis will be returning back to Triple-A.
Minnesota Twins eyeing the future with Royce Lewis
The Twins do have a logical reason behind their decision to send Lewis to the minors. They are planning to have him learn other positions on the diamond, something that could make a major difference in his future. As Lewis has a grand total of 24 games at a position other than short, it makes sense to send him back to Triple-A.
This trek to the minors may not last long. If Lewis can adapt to other positions well, he could find himself back in Minnesota fairly quickly. He does have some experience at second, third, and center, so there is a foundation to build upon.
He does not appear to have anything left to prove with the bat. Despite missing 28 months due to injuries and the pandemic canceling the 2020 minor league season, he hit the ground running in Triple-A. That production carried over to the majors, where Lewis had a .308/.325/.564 batting line with two homers and four doubles in 40 plate appearances. Lewis is ready.
His time is going to come. However, where it is going to come could be a question. If Correa stays in Minnesota, then Lewis will need to play another position. That is what the Twins are eyeing as they have their phenom play other positions in the minors.
The Minnesota Twins are sending Royce Lewis to the minors to learn other positions. This will only give him more options for his future path.
