Boston Red Sox: Just call it The Trevor Story Makes History Game
On Thursday night, the Boston Red Sox finally got a glimpse of the Trevor Story they had been hoping to see all season. They also got to see history in the process as well.
Story, one of the biggest offseason acquisitions for the Boston Red Sox, went 4-for-4, including three home runs, and totaled seven RBI to help Boston power past the Seattle Mariners, 12-6, at Fenway Park on Thursday night.
Trevor Story introduced himself properly to Boston Red Sox fans with a history-making three-homer performance at Fenway Park
The production was a far cry from what the Red Sox had seen from Story all season, who entered the game with just two home runs all season in 122 at-bats. Story logged 13 bases in Thursday’s win after coming into the contest with just 39 all season.
It was earlier in the month when Red Sox fans booed Story and let him know exactly how they felt about his performance when he struck out four times in four at-bats against Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels. That all seemed like a distant memory on Thursday as Story homered in the second, third, and eighth innings and also added a sixth-inning single.
Story also walked and stole base, showcasing all of the skills that helped make him an All-Star shortstop with the Colorado Rockies and one of the more intriguing offseason possibilities for teams in need of infield help.
He also made history in the process on Thursday night.
Boston’s decision to sign Story to a six-year, $140 million deal and play him at second base came with plenty of questions about how the decision would work on the field and in the clubhouse with Xander Bogaerts already at shortstop and entering a season that could well determine his future with the franchise. Until Thursday, with Boston posting a 15-22 record coming into the game, those same questions about Story’s place in the lineup and living up to his contract were magnified.
However, a few swings of the bat from Story put those questions aside … for now … and potentially in the near future as well. This could be the beginning of a hot streak at the plate for Story, who is now hitting .321 over his last eight games after Thursday’s explosion.
