Stop us if you’ve heard this story before. The Atlanta Braves were dead in the water, having fallen below .500 with their postseason hopes seemingly out of reach. The New York Mets, meanwhile, had roared out to a relatively hot start and were the only team in the division over .500. Then injuries to their rotation set in and the Mets fell apart.
That is right where we find ourselves this season. The Braves had a 17-21 record heading into Friday and were eight games behind the Mets. Once again, the Mets were the only team with a winning record in the division, but their pitching depth is being tested. It is a familiar story.
Atlanta Braves getting ready to make their move up the standings
While it is far too early to say that 2022 will have the same outcome, the Braves have the perfect opportunity to make their move. Beginning with Friday’s game against the Marlins, they play 29 consecutive games against teams that have a losing record. In fact, their next game against a team with a winning record does not occur until June 20 when they face the Giants.
There are some obvious holes. The bullpen could use another piece or two. It is fair to wonder if the Braves will need to remake their outfield once again with the difference being that Ronald Acuna Jr. is healthy. The bench may also need some help.
But there are some players coming back. The Braves are hoping that Eddie Rosario and Mike Soroka will be healthy enough to make an impact by the All Star Break. And it is not a surprise that players would struggle to start the year after the shortened spring training.
Now it is time. It is time for the Braves to take advantage of their schedule and the Mets’ pitching injuries. It is time for the Braves to repeat last year and take advantage of those favorable matchups and the other team’s shortcomings.
The Atlanta Braves have the perfect chance to repeat their success from last year. If they are going to make their move, it is going to happen now.
