The New York Yankees have a vibrant history. Their franchise greats make up the inner circle of the Hall of Fame as one could build a viable team of MLB’s all time greats from their history alone. With 27 titles and such an impressive collection of players, it is understandable why the past would have such a prominent place even now.

There are certain places where the past should not matter, and that includes free agency. Nonetheless, the Yankees are living in the past with their recent signings, as they signed both Matt Carpenter and Shane Greene.

New York Yankees looking to past with recent signings

Both signings make sense. The Yankees bullpen has undergone a series of injuries over the past few days, making it necessary to add depth wherever possible. Greene has been a solid reliever over his career, serving as a closer and in a setup role. While the 2019 All Star has battled injuries throughout the past few years, he has been effective when he has been on the mound.

Carpenter also gives the Yankees more depth in their infield. He has spent time at first, second, and third during his career, providing the bench with another utility option. As DJ Lemahieu is dealing with discomfort in his wrist and Giancarlo Stanton is on the Injured List, there is the potential for playing time.

However, unlike Greene, it has been years since Carpenter was a viable major league option. He has produced a combined .203/.325/.346 batting line in his 910 plate appearances since the start of the 2019 season, hitting 22 homers and 37 doubles. While he had fared well in Triple-A for the Rangers this year, it is fair to wonder if he has anything left when it comes to the major league level.

But that is what the Yankees are hoping for. They are looking back at the past once again as they hope that these players will be able to provide something as they try to overcome the injuries on their roster. However, there may be nothing left in the tank moving ahead.
