The Miami Marlins have an impressive collection of pitching prospects. Several of the top minor league arms reside in their system, giving them an embarrassment of riches when it comes to their future pitching staff.

Another part of that future is heading to the majors. According to reports, the Marlins are set to promote Edward Cabrera from Triple-A, potentially giving him take the ball on Tuesday in Colorado.

Edward Cabrera getting second look with Miami Marlins

Cabrera did have a seven game stint for the Marlins at the end of 2021. He struggled in that time, posting a 0-3 record with a 5.81 ERA and a 1.633 WHiP in his 26.1 innings. Although he struck out 28 batters, Cabrera also issued 19 walks and allowed six homers as he had difficulty getting outs at the major league level.

He was not exactly lights out in Triple-A prior to being called up. Cabrera had posted a 4.56 ERA and a 1.352 WHiP in his 23.2 innings, striking out 32 batters with 12 walks. However, with Cody Poteet heading to the Injured List, and Max Meyer still battling ulnar nerve irritation, he was the most logical candidate to get that call.

Cabrera does have the type of stuff where he could be a top of the rotation arm. His plus fastball sits in the upper 90s and can reach triple digits, a bowling ball of an offering that leads to plenty of ground balls. He has a plus changeup and slider as well, with the slider having impressive two plane break and the changeup having plenty of fading action despite coming in at the lower 90s. Cabrera also has an above average curve with plenty of downward action that can generate plenty of swings and misses.

But it all comes down to his command. Cabrera left far too many pitches in the zone during his trial in the majors last season and his changeup, in particular, was hammered. Not only was he unable to throw strikes when needed, but when he did get the ball over the plate, it was right in the hitting zone. The Marlins are hoping that will change this time.

The Miami Marlins are reportedly set to promote Edward Cabrera to the majors. They are certainly hoping for better results this time.
