The biggest question surrounding the Chicago Cubs is when the fire sale is going to begin. Willson Contreras is expected to be put on the trade block and will generate a great deal of attention when that happens. Drew Smyly, if healthy, and David Robertson could fetch a decent return as well. The Cubs are, once again, a disappointment.
While the Cubs may be a disaster in the standings, there are some exciting prospects that are making their way at the major league level. One of those prospects, Christopher Morel, is a reason to keep tuning in to a Cubs game.
Christopher Morel a spark for Chicago Cubs
Morel was not exactly a highly regarded prospect. MLB.com rated him as the 21st best player in the Cubs’ system. While his plus speed and raw power were viewed as assets, scouts also felt that he had a tendency to overswing instead of just letting his natural ability flow. With his ability to play several positions in the infield, as well as in the outfield, he appeared to be a future utility man for Chicago.
He has exceeded expectations since making his debut on May 17. Morel has reached base in each of his first 19 games, the longest on-base streak to begin a career of any active player. Heading into Sunday’s action, he had produced a .297/.391/.486 batting line in his 87 plate appearances, hitting six doubles and two homers while stealing six bases.
His defensive versatility has also been valuable for the Cubs. He has allowed them to push the ineffective Jason Heyward out of the lineup as he has made ten appearances in center thus far. Morel has also made eight appearances at second, three at third, and two at short. Considering his minor league usage, it is likely a matter of time before the corner outfield spots are added as well.
Morel still has a long way to go before he reaches the major league record. Alvin Davis was able to get on base via a hit, walk, or hit by pitch in the first 47 games of his career. However, even if Morel is unable to match Davis, he has still become one of the more exciting players on the Cubs.
Christopher Morel has been a sparkplug in the Chicago Cubs lineup thus far. At this point, he is one of the few reasons to tune in to a Cubs game.
