At this point in time, it is fair to say that the Washington Nationals are not going anywhere in 2022. With a 21-36 record heading into Wednesday, the Nationals are trying to stay ahead of the Reds, let alone attempt to chase down a playoff berth.
But 2023 could be a different story. Their younger players will have another year of experience in the majors and could take a step forward. However, the Nationals’ chances will hinge on the top of their rotation, particularly Stephen Strasburg.
Stephen Strasburg looking to give Washington Nationals hope for 2023
It is difficult to count on Strasburg. He has made just seven appearances in the majors since the start of the 2020 season as he has battled injury. It is also fair to expect that he will miss time going forward as he has made 30 or more appearances in just three of his 12 years in the majors. Add in his recovery from thoracic outlet syndrome, and he is a giant question mark.
Strasburg can be a top of the rotation starter when he is healthy. He has posted a 3.21 ERA and a 1.093 WHiP in his 1465.1 innings, striking out 1718 batters with 392 walks. A three time All Star, he is the type of pitcher that can make a tremendous difference to a team’s fortunes.
That would also be the case in Washington. His presence removes the memory of Patrick Corbin from the top of their rotation which makes the Nationals better by default. If he can show that dominant form again when he returns on Thursday and through the rest of the season, then the Nationals may be able to take a step forward in their quest to return to the postseason.
Stephen Strasburg could be a beacon of hope for the Washington Nationals 2023 hopes. That journey begins on Thursday as he returns to the mound.
