There was a time when Roman Quinn was expected to be a key part of the Phillies’ future. A second round selection in the 2011 MLB Draft, he had been one of the better prospects in baseball, appearing on top 100 prospect lists in 2013 and 2016. However, injuries derailed his career as he has yet to appear in more than 50 games in any season at the major league level.

That does not mean that teams will not give him a chance. The Marlins signed him to a minor league deal during the offseason, releasing him just before the season began. He returned to Philadelphia but was let go once more on June 5. Quinn is now on his third team of the year as he has signed with the Kansas City Royals and was assigned to Triple-A.

Kansas City Royals hope to find something with Roman Quinn

Quinn has not exactly done much at the major league level when he has been healthy. He has produced a .223/.300/.343 batting line in his 552 plate appearances, hitting eight homers and 19 doubles while stealing 43 bases.

He has fared better in the minors. While Quinn’s injury woes have held him to just 1995 plate appearances over parts of ten minor league seasons, he does have a .280/.357/.409 batting line with 29 homers and 186 steals. With his ability to draw a walk and play all three outfield spots, that production makes him an intriguing player.

It is possible that he gets another chance in Kansas City. The Royals are going to be selling yet again, with Andrew Benintendi and possibly Michael Taylor ending up on the move. If he can stay healthy and be productive in Omaha, he could get another opportunity after the deadline.

But that is entirely contingent on his ability to remain healthy. Quinn could be the exact type of player that the Royals covet, someone that can cause havoc on the basepaths and make contact. He just needs to actually stay on the diamond.
