Roberto Osuna appeared to be on track for a Hall of Fame career. The former Houston Astros closer had notched 154 saves through his age 24 season, and had he continued at that pace, would have had one of the greatest careers of any reliever in MLB history.

While his performance indicated that he should have a long major league career, there is more to Osuna’s story than his production. He had been suspended for 75 games in 2018 due to his violation of the league’s domestic violence policy. An elbow injury torpedoed in 2020 season after four outings, and while he was recommended for Tommy John surgery, he opted for rest and rehab. The Astros outrighted him off their roster after the season, with Osuna signing with the Diablos Rojos de Mexico.

Osuna had a great deal of success in Mexico, posting a 1.66 ERA and a 0.737 WHiP over his 38 innings, notching 18 saves while striking out 42 batters and issuing just five walks. That success attracted some attention, as Osuna has signed with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Nippon Professional Baseball.

There is no questioning Osuna’s success. After all, he has a 2.74 ERA and a 0.905 WHiP over his 315 major league innings, striking out 348 batters with 58 walks. The Marines are getting a dominant force for the ninth inning.

It is possible that, with a strong showing in Japan, Osuna could return to the majors. He is just 27 years old and still has his entire prime ahead of him. If he can stay out of trouble and be productive, another team could give him a chance, especially as it has been proven that talent and production outweigh anything else. Just look at Aroldis Chapman.
