The Tampa Bay Rays are right where they are every year, in the middle of the postseason picture despite being dramatically outspent by the other contenders in the American League.

This is par for the course. The Rays find ways to use their assembly line of prospects and impressive scouting and analytics departments to fill the gaps on their roster. Underappreciated assets are brought in during free agency and prove to be bargains. It is the Rays Way.

Three trade targets for the Tampa Bay Rays

That is usually the way of the trade deadline as well. Although the Rays will look to make a major splash, they tend have the same philosophy of making under the radar moves. That does not mean that a big name will not come to Tampa Bay – they did trade for Nelson Cruz last year after all. And maybe they will make a splash again this year.

The Tampa Bay Rays are in a good position but still need some help for their playoff push. Let’s take a look at three potential trade targets.

Willson Contreras

Catcher has been a constant issue for the Tampa Bay Rays since the franchise came into existence back in 1998. Jose Molina is the franchise leader with 6.8 fWAR as a catcher which just goes to show what a disaster the position has been.

This year is not any different. Mike Zunino, who had been an All Star in 2021, cratered before landing on the Injured List. Francisco Mejia has not lived up to his potential thus far. Rene Pinto is a depth piece or a major league backup at best. Once again, they need help.

Fortunately, help should be on the trading block. The Chicago Cubs are facing another disappointing season and will be selling players off once again. Willson Contreras, an impending free agent, could be a temporary solution to their woes behind the plate.

There are risks in bringing him on board. Contreras notoriously wears down in the second half. While he has a strong arm and controls the running game well, he is not the type of defensive presence behind the plate that the Rays covet. However, his powerful bat and ability to extend the lineup outweigh those concerns.

The Tampa Bay Rays need to find something that can produce behind the plate. Willson Contreras would be a perfect fit in the lineup.
